Planning a Trip to Sydney from the Midwest

"You're for Sydney" is the kind of local slogan that tells you a city takes pride in itself, and Sydney gives visitors plenty of reasons to share that feeling. For travelers starting out from Cleveland, though, getting there takes real planning. There are no direct flights from Ohio to Australia, so most itineraries connect through a West Coast gateway such as Los Angeles or San Francisco. From there, a long overnight flight crosses the Pacific. Plan on a full day of travel each way and build in a rest day when you land.

• Entry requirements: US citizens need an electronic travel authorization to visit Australia. Apply through the official Australian government channels well before departure.
• Seasons are reversed: December through February is Sydney's summer, which makes it a popular escape from a Lake Erie winter. June through August is mild and cooler.
• Time difference: Sydney is many hours ahead of Eastern Time. Schedule calls home and any online check-ins with that in mind.

Getting around and what to see

Sydney's harbour is the center of the city's life. Ferries from Circular Quay are a practical way to get around and among the most scenic. A rechargeable transit card or a contactless bank card covers trains, buses, light rail and ferries. First-time visitors usually take in the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, walk the coastal path between Bondi and Coogee, and spend an afternoon in The Rocks or at Manly Beach.

If you're hoping to catch a concert, sporting event or show during your stay, check the official venue or event website for dates and ticketing, and book early in peak summer months. Always buy from authorised sellers rather than unfamiliar resale sites.
